Honduras

Central America is definitely one of the great areas of the world for growing tobacco – the near-perfect climate and the rich soils produce leaves that can be rich in colour and develop wonderful flavours once rolled into cigars.

Although Honduran cigars are maybe not quite as popular as their southern cousins from Nicaragua, they are equally as good in terms of the quality of tobacco and the build of the cigars. Over the last 20-30 years several big-name producers, have opened factories in Honduras. Slowly, but surely, Honduras is starting to step out of the shadows of their highly successful neighbour and show the world what they can do.

The Mayans And Tobacco

Like many of the Central American countries, Honduras has a long history with tobacco, pre-dating the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the Spanish by about 5,000 years.

It seems that it was the Mayan civilisation, which was spread throughout Central America, which was possibly the first to cultivate and smoke tobacco – certainly, there are a few stone carvings depicting what are thought to be Mayan Gods smoking either cigars or pipes! Used in religious ceremonies, it would relax the mind and allow clarity of thought.

The Spanish Effect.

It wasn’t until the Spanish came that tobacco was grown commercially. Recognising the huge potential, a trading post was established in 1765 near Santa Rosa de Copan, the largest city in northwest Honduras, to help facilitate the export of the precious tobacco. The Royal Tobacco Factory, as it was called, controlled everything tobacco-related in Honduras, from the Cultivation, processing and exporting of it.

Most of the tobacco exported would be shipped to Europe where it would then be made into cigars. When Honduras gained its independence in 1821, although freed from the realms of Spanish control, the tobacco industry remained firmly in the grip of the Honduran Government.

It remained that way until 1883 when the laws were relaxed allowing private individual growers to plant and grow tobacco. As a result, many new areas came online, such as the Jamastran Valley and the Talanga Valley.

The Rocky Pan-American Highway!

The Jamastran Valley is presently the home to most of the Honduran cigar producers, many of which are based in and around the town of Danli. Situated in the south of the country, Danli (like Esteli in Nicaragua) is serviced by the Pan-American highway, which allows the relatively easy transport of tobacco and cigars.

The tobaccos produced in the Jamastran are usually relatively full-bodied and can produce cigars that are intensely flavoured.

Rocky Patel is possibly the most well known producer in Honduras currently, but you will also find other famous brands such as Camacho, Alec Bradley and Plasencia here to name but a few.
