When it comes to sheer scale, Plasencia is certainly pretty close to the top of the pile, being one of the biggest cigar producers on the planet. Not only do they make cigars for themselves, but they also produce a lot of ‘own label’ product for other companies. Although you may have never purchased a Plasencia cigar, you may very well have tried one under different branding.
Plasencia’s story starts in the Canary Islands in 1865, when Don Eduardo Plasencia decided to leave his homeland and go to the Vuelta Abajo in Cuba and start farming tobacco there. In 1898, his nephew Sixto started working alongside Don Eduardo, taking an active interest in the business and helping to develop it.
By 1920 Sixto had opened the Corojal Farm to further increase production. Over the next couple of decades with production increasing Sixto started selling to overseas markets and in 1943, Sixto’s son Sixto Plasencia Pérez, joined the business to help further develop it.
Things took a dramatic downturn in 1963 when the Cuban government confiscated and took control of the farms. Sixto Plasencia Pérez and his family fled, initially going to Mexico, before eventually getting to and settling in Nicaragua. By 1965 he had started farming again, using Cuban seed in the rich soils of Nicaragua, however, by 1978, the family were on the move again, this time to Honduras, because of the Nicaraguan uprising.
Just like in 1965, the desire continue was strong and so again, Sixto Plasencia Pérez started farming again. By 1987, Nestor Plasencia was taking an active role within the company and in 1990 the family were back in Nicargua setting up a new factory there. Because of the increase in production from both the Honduran and Nicaraguan, the extra monies brought in enabled Plasencia to expand, buying up other farms to increase production.
In 1998, Nestor started growing tobacco organically, becoming certified in 2000 – even today, they are one of the few certified organic producers.
Plasencia are certainly an innovative producer and are constantly striving to develop new techniques, such as fertigation that uses 50% less water than other irrigation techniques. They were also one of the first brands to provide more than just a wage for their employees, developing pre-school facilities and childhood development centres along with other community projects.
Plasencia cigars are available in over 80 countries and produce own label cigars for around 30 or so other brands. As I previously stated, you may well have tried a Plasencia cigar without even knowing it!
