The Dominican Republic is quite possibly one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Famed for its long beaches of golden sands and amazingly beautiful scenery, it’s no wonder that it has become one of most popular holiday destinations in the Caribbean.
Apart from the afore mentioned beaches and scenery, The Dominican is also the world’s biggest exporter / producer of cigars making it a must stop destination for cigar enthusiasts. If ever there was a country to go to where you can enjoy a restful break whilst discovering new cigars, this would be it.
Not only is the Dominican top of the pile for cigar production, but it is top of the pile by a healthy margin too. The neighbouring island of Cuba, possibly the most famous cigar producing country in the world, languishes in a somewhat distant third place.
Situated in the Caribbean, The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern half of the Island of Hispaniola which it shares with Haiti. Before the arrival of the Europeans and Christopher Columbus in the 1400’s the island was inhabited by the Taino people who had arrived from Venezuela around 1000 years ago.
Like many countries in the Caribbean and Central America, the inhabitants of the Dominican grew tobacco, which they used for medicinal purposes and for their religious ceremonies. The Spanish were quick to capitalise on the tobacco production, exporting comparatively huge quantities to Spain for processing into cigars.
Although cigars have been made in the Dominican Republic for several decades, it has only really been in the last 30 years or so that things have really started to take off and especially so in the last decade. The quality of the Dominican product is second to none and like most other countries, it produces cigars in a range of different styles and flavour profiles. Some of the most famous cigar brands emanate from the Dominican Republic, such as the likes of La Aurora, Davidoff, La Galera and VegaFina to name but four. La Aurora was the first company to start making cigars in the Dominican, having been founded in 1903, and were, in the main, responsible for the Dominican gaining that important foothold in the world cigar industry.
VegaFina is another interesting brand that seems to have appeared out of nowhere to become, as they claim, the biggest selling cigar brand on the planet – immensely popular in Spain and a number of other countries in Europe, they arrived in the UK during 2022 and have since gained quite an impressive following.
No matter what your taste in cigars, the Dominican Republic is sure to have something to suit.
