Currently owned by British American Tobacco (BAT) the Niemeyer company was founded in 1819 as a trading company for the Dutch colonies. Over the years and through the acquisition of other companies, they soon started producing tobacco.
Meindert Niemeyer was the original owner and the company remained a totally family owned and run business until 1990 when it was bought over by Rothman International which was later absorbed by BAT.
