Merkur was founded in 1896 in Solingen in Germany by Emil Hermes. Due to the high number of steel producers in the area called Hermes, Emil decided to call the company Merkur, which is the Roman name for the messenger of the Gods (Hermes was the Greek God of wealth and trade).
Initially production focused on high quality, precision made safety razors. These days safety razors still form a large part of their production, shaving kits and other accessories have added to their portfolio.
