The ever-popular J Cortes Cigars was founded in Moen, Belgium in 1926 by Maurits Vandermarliere. Situated above his small shop, Maurits slowly grew his business, eventually needing bigger premises from which to work.
The business moved from the attic in Moen to a small cigar factory in nearby Heerstert, one of the local nearby villages. In the mid 60’s, a number Mauritz children joined the company (4 sons) to help with the day to day running. It was in 1965 when the youngest son, Guido joined the company taking over the export division. The rest as they say is history!
Guido made a pretty big impact and steered the company towards success. Between 1975 and 1979, Guido acquired the Neos Cigar company and TAF cigar factories enabling the brand production to increase and therefore sales too. By 1986 they were ready to open a third factory, this time though it was in Sri Lanka.
Now Called J Cortes Cigars (it was Vandermarliere) the brand was sold in over 80 countries world wide employing in the region of 2000. Guido’s son Frederick took over the day to day operations in 2005, but Guido is still around to offer advice.
