Originally created by Alfred Dunhill, the famous English entrepreneur who created a business selling luxury goods and tobaccos. Due to various ‘technicalities’ the business was split in to two with the tobacco portion being sold off to British American Tobacco.
The luxury goods arm is currently owned by Swiss company Richemont. The famous White Spot on Humidors and pipes is a Trade Mark introduced in 1912 that signifies the quality of the product. Alfred wasn’t satisfied with the quality of the pipes being sold, coming from independent pipe makers at the time, so the internal workshop was setup in 1910. By 1912 he introduced the White Sport Dot to his clientele and staff. Now only the best pipes get the White Spot.
