From small beginnings in 1998, Drew Estate have grown into one of the biggest producers in the world, with an extensive portfolio of hand rolled and flavour infused cigars.
Set up in 1998 by Jonathan Drew & Marvin Samel, the two New Yorkers started Drew Estate in a small 16 square foot retail kiosk in the World Trade Center in NYC.
Sales weren’t great and it took a lot to keep going. In late 1998 Jonathan Drew moved to Esteli, Nicaragua with a handful of rollers and an even smaller handful of money to set up the Drew Estate factory.
It was quite a change from his NYC apartment to sleeping on a mattress above a ram shackle factory, and not being able to speak the local lingo!
Back in Brooklyn, Marvin was holding down the fort, begging & borrowing from anyone who’d give them a chance. In early 1999, Jonathan returned to Brooklyn with several amazing new blends for the next Drew Estate release. It was different, even shocking, and it needed something equally as spectacular to launch it. Enter Scott “ACID” Chester, an emerging artist in the DUMBO scene, whose mixing of industrial, urban, graffiti & motorcycle art would make for the perfect vehicle.
ACID, which Drew Estate are most famous for and was first released in 1999, was not the first Drew Estate brand as many people think. La Vieja Habana was. Originally released in 1998, this traditional cigar put us on the map, but when hurricane Mitch ravaged Nicaragua, the brand was put on hold. In 2001, La Vieja Habana returned loud and proud in stylish Art Deco form.
ACID though was the brand that really made Drew Estate – these flavour infused cigars appeal to both newbies and aficionados alike and sales went stratospheric, easily outselling all the other DE brands.In July of 2007, La Gran Fabrica, Drew Estates state of the art cigar factory opened in Esteli. One of the largest cigar factories in the world, it would produce around 100,000 cigars A DAY!
