Colibri was founded by Julius Lowenthal in 1928, although the company had, in essence, been producing smoking requisites since about 1910. Julius helped develop the first semi-automatic lighter (1928) and the first fully automatic one in 1935.
Colibri has always been at the forefront when it comes to product development with a number of firsts – the first visible multi-gas refill and the hydraulic auto flint system (1958) – the Piezo Electric lighter (1961) – the ‘Sensatron’ Battery operated touch lighter (1977) and the Quantum, the first windproof lighter (1987) to name but a few.
In the James Bond film ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’, the ‘gun’ was supplied by Colibri. The Gun itself comprised of a Colibri Molectric 88 lighter, Colibri Cufflinks, Colibri Cigarette Case and a Colibri Fountain – now that’s what I call product placement!
Colibri are synonymous with quality and today they are renowned for producing some of the most interesting Cigar cutters and lighters around as well as a small selection of Pipe lighters.
