Ernesto Perez-Carrillo is quite possibly one of the most gifted cigar makers around. Born in 1961 in Cuba, his father was initially a small-time cigar maker / producer who sold cigars on the streets of Cuba. As time moved on he started climbing the ladder to become a master blender in one of the Cuban factories. Ernest Snr was also a successful politician with the family name being held in high regard, especially after he was elected to the Cuban senate in both 1954 & 1958.
When the Cuban revolution really began to really kick-off, Ernesto Snr decided that the time was right to up sticks and got his family out of Cuba, eventually making it the United States. The plan was to go back once the dust had settled, but it didn’t quite work out that way.
Ernesto Jnr’s main passion as a kid was music and his love of Jazz. His passion was so strong in fact that he wanted to be a drummer in Jazz band. After a move to New York failed to develop any great amount of work as a musician, he changed direction and he decided to move back to Little Havana in Miami. Here he would work with his father at his father’s recently acquired cigar factory.
Ernesto Jnr took over the running of his fathers cigar factory (El Credito) in 1980 after his father died – although initially it was tough financially, with help from friends and other cigar factories in the local area he managed to steady the ship and build the business.
Today, Ernesto Perez- Carrillo Jnr is one of the most successful cigar makers on the planet. He has won the highly coveted ‘Cigar Of The Year’ (Cigar Aficionado) award TWICE and came in second on a further occasion.
