La Flor Dominicana La Volcada

Naming cigars can be a tricky business – getting the right name that sticks in peoples minds is half the battle, and if it comes with a memorable back story attached to it then, in theory, the cigar should sell itself. Some names however, can be a little mis-leading or even uninspiring as in the case of this cigar, as ‘La Volcada’ literally translates as the ‘The Overturned’.
However, when you investigate a little further and find out that ‘La Volcada’ is actually a term for a step in a tango dance that originated in Uruguay, then it all becomes a little more appealing. Litto Gomez, one of the world’s leading cigar makers and the maker of this cigar, grew up in Uruguay and this cigar celebrates his Uruguayan heritage in style.
The ‘La Volcada’ is the third instalment in an unofficial series of small batch cigars released by La Flor Domincana; the first being La Nox and the second the Andalusian Bull. An oily San Andres wrapper covers an Ecuadorian Corojo binder and filler from the Dominican Republic. The cigar looks as equally as impressive as Litto’s ‘Andalusian Bull’ (a former ‘Cigar Of The Year’ in Cigar Aficionado) although in a more elegant fashion.
The ‘La Volcada’ is Churchill sized cigar measuring 7 inches in length with a 42 ring gauge which gives it a generous 1 hour 20 minute smoke time. Featuring a knotted pigtail cap this cigar has notes of leather, coffee and pepper with a spicy undertone and an open, even draw. This is lighter than the other two cigars previously mentioned, being a more medium-bodied affair, yet is equally as enthralling in the flavour department. The way the flavours dance around tongue are simply phenomenal and are definitely worthy of a 10!
