Foundation Cigars Olmec Claro Toro

Olmec Claro Toro Cigar Review: A New Classic from Foundation Cigars

First Impressions

The Olmec Claro Toro is one of those rare cigars that seems to tick every single box — and then a few you didn’t even know existed.
I first tried it back in August 2024, and from the very first draw, I was blown away by its flavour, balance, and exceptional construction.

The Story Behind the Name

The name Olmec is inspired by one of the oldest known civilisations of the Americas — a culture that predated both the Aztecs and Mayans.
Their rituals, artistry, and tobacco use left a deep cultural legacy, and the brand’s identity is a respectful nod to their rich heritage.

The Olmecs were remarkably advanced for their time, not only in science and agriculture but also in the arts.
Their surviving artifacts — intricate carvings, colossal stone heads, and ceremonial objects — still evoke awe and admiration today.

Who Makes the Olmec Cigar?

Nick Melillo of Foundation Cigars produces the Olmec range. A boutique cigar maker who’s been crafting exceptional blends for nearly a decade.
Before launching Foundation, Nick was a co-owner of the legendary Drew Estate, and his experience clearly shines through in this line.

While Foundation’s output is smaller and more personal, the attention to detail and dedication to flavour is second to none.

Flavour Profile

The Olmec Claro Toro begins light in body, opening with cedar, gentle spice, and a creamy smoothness that immediately draws you in.
By the end of the first fifth, the profile deepens — richer, earthier tones emerge, joined by subtle hints of coffee and soft caramel.

This isn’t a sweet cigar by any means, but there’s a whisper of sweetness that lingers beautifully alongside the spice.

Moving into the final third, the flavours evolve again. The spice becomes slightly more pronounced, while the earthy character intensifies at the mid-palate.
A touch of woodiness and nutty warmth rounds off the experience perfectly — a complex, layered smoke from start to finish.

Perfect Pairing

I highly recommend pairing the Olmec Claro Toro with Doorley’s 14-Year-Old Barbados Rum.
The cigar’s earthy notes beautifully complement the rum’s dried fruit richness. On top of that, the pairing that feels completely natural — a combination made in heaven.

Final Thoughts

The Olmec Claro Toro has quickly become one of my personal favourites. It’s balanced, complex, and full of personality — everything a great cigar should be.
If you appreciate craftsmanship, depth, and a smoke that takes you on a journey, this is one you’ll want in your humidor.
