The Cigar
The CigarKings Maduro Robusto is a Nicaraguan cigar made using Viso and Seco filler tobaccos rather than heavier Ligero, giving plenty of flavour without becoming overpowering. Its naturally matured Maduro wrapper brings a touch of sweetness to a profile of roasted nuts, earth, leather and pepper, with coffee, cocoa and a creamy, slightly malty character developing through the smoke.
The Whisky
Kilkerran 12 Year Old is a characterful Campbeltown single malt, bottled at 46% and matured in a combination of 70% bourbon and 30% sherry casks. Rich and slightly oily on the palate, there are notes of citrus and orchard fruit alongside creamy malt, gentle peat smoke and pepper. Sweeter notes of sticky toffee and butterscotch develop underneath, with nuts and lingering embers appearing towards the finish.
The Pairing
The creamy, nutty character of the CigarKings works particularly well with Kilkerran’s oily texture and sweeter malt, while leather, pepper and earth provide a natural link to the whisky’s gentle peat and spice. The Maduro wrapper adds enough sweetness to meet the toffee and butterscotch notes without masking Kilkerran’s brighter citrus character. A rich but nicely balanced pairing, with sweetness, nuts and cream giving way to pepper, earth and a gentle smokiness.
